Verbal Phrases



*Verbal phrases can be subjects, objects, or verbal modifiers.


*The three main verbal phrases are:

Participles

They can function as adjectives

Verb + “-ed” or “-ing”

Infinitives "to + verb"

They can be nouns, adjectives, and adverbs.

Gerunds

Function as nouns.

Verb + “-ing” can be subject,object, or verbal modifier.



*Examples:

Participles

Participle phrase:

Panting furiously, the dog chased

the rabbit.

Infinitive

(bold= infinitive; italics: infinitive phrase)

He decided to go downtown.

(“to go” is included in the infinitive phrase. The infinitive is always included in the infinitive phrase.)

Gerunds

He gets confidence from knowing so much.

(The gerund is always included in the gerundive phrase.)

Reflection on A White Flower
Yesterday I was the center of white satin petals arranged adoringly around me on my special day. Soon the season passed and the petals faded, fell away crumbled power in a cold wind. I also hardened, fell apart in the dew of a frosty morning, but that moment was my glory. The sun kissed me.
